Members of the press, distinguished officers of the Armed Forces, respected community leaders, family, and friends.

Today, we gather to honor a distinguished leader, an exemplary patriot, and a courageous officer whose life has been defined by unwavering dedication to the defence and maritime security of the Federal Republic of Nigeria — Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Rtd), CFR.

As Vice Admiral Gambo celebrates his 60th Birthday and Diamond Jubilee, we reflect on a extraordinary journey of military service, strategic vision, and profound national contribution.

A Legacy of Strategic Leadership and Maritime Excellence

Enlisting in the Nigerian Navy as a member of Regular Course 36 of the Nigerian Defence Academy in September 1984, Vice Admiral Gambo built a career spanning nearly four decades. An Underwater Warfare Specialist and Intelligence strategist, his tactical brilliance earned him critical postings across Nigeria and internationally — including serving as Nigeria’s Defence Attaché to Luanda, Angola, and holding key roles in the Office of the National Security Adviser and Defence Space Administration.

When he assumed office as the 21st indigenous Chief of Naval Staff from 2021 to 2023, Vice Admiral Gambo led the Nigerian Navy through a transformative era in maritime security. Under his stewardship:

  • Eradication of Sea Piracy: Nigeria achieved a historical milestone by successfully exiting the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) list of piracy-prone countries in 2022.
  • Fleet Modernization & Capability: The Navy witnessed enhanced operational readiness, asset acquisition, and aggressive intelligence-driven operations against illegal oil bunkering, crude oil theft, and maritime criminality.
  • Institutional Development & Sports: Beyond core military operations, Vice Admiral Gambo championed sports and equitation within the military, establishing the Nigerian Navy Polo Association and building key infrastructure to foster unity, civil-military relations, and revenue potential through sports.

A Worthy Patriot and Mentor

Beyond the uniform, Vice Admiral Gambo holds a PhD in Transport Management from Ladoke Akintola University, exemplifying intellectual rigor alongside military command. His national honor of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) remains a testament to his selfless contributions to the nation.

As he marks this milestone of 60 years, we express our deep gratitude for his decades of service, sacrifice, and visionary leadership.

On behalf of the entire nation, colleagues, friends, and well-wishers, we pray that Almighty Allah grants Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Rtd), CFR, continued good health, long life, wisdom, and peace as he continues to contribute to national growth and humanity.
